Who We Are?

The Origins of Press Glocal

Our project started in 2017 with a dream. We were a group of English language education professionals discussing a better way to reach our students. We discussed less grammar teaching, more local context, a larger focus on speaking skills, and working with a descriptive model of language as opposed to a prescriptive one. We identified key areas that we could address in our classrooms in order to help our students succeed. What we were talking about were the ways in which we supplemented and altered the curricula we were currently working with. We realized that there was a gap in the market when we started to share our ideas with other teachers who felt the same and were also having to alter their materials. It was then that we decided to embark on this ambitious project. In the beginning there were just three of us in an office sketching out our ideas on blank pieces of paper and today we are working with a graphic design firm, professional A/V crews, an IT team, and a publishing company. We have learned and developed our ethos and methodology along the way and have included teachers on a learning journey by providing them with ways to reflect on their teaching and develop their skills as teachers. We want to bring you along with us on this journey and we hope that you are as excited as we are to begin.

What We Do?

A Journey of Learning

The Less is More series takes students from A1 level up to (eventually) C1. At A1 level learners will be dealing with familiar topics through English, which will help them connect with the language. It also aims to help students build cultural knowledge of other ‘native speaking’ English language cultures. From A1 the learning journey begins taking students from functional language to understanding much more complex topics and issues. This journey is meant to resemble the language learning journey of a student: functional useful chunks and phrases, based within the security of a familiar context to understanding global issues and world topics through English as it is learnt. As such it goes from the more local to the more global.

The Less is More Ethos

The Less is More series assumes that students already have some familiarity with English language learning. The series is designed with integrated skills in mind, informed by the global standards set by the CEFR. It builds students’ skills by presenting, at the early levels, useful chunks and phrases, useful vocabulary, functional language and constructs the foundations of grammatical knowledge through 5 minute grammar. The concept with 5 minute grammar reflects the fact that Less is More is designed to give students more time practicing and building their confidence using English, rather than focusing on being completely grammatically accurate. As the levels go up 5 minute grammar turns into 2 minute grammar which reflects what students should know at each level. Reflective learning is a key feature of the Less is More series and students are expected to reflect on their learning, through 2 minute grammar, guided discovery and noticing, as well as self assessment of ability.

The Less is More series also emphasises 21st Century skills and encourages exploratory learning which gets students to engage with critical thinking through the medium of English. The series comes with an online learning platform that helps students study autonomously and get instant feedback on their digital devices.

Not Forgetting the Teacher

One aspect of the Less is More Series, which was emphasised by our experienced authors, is the emphasis on continued professional development. For teachers, teaching is learning and the education of a teacher doesn’t end when qualifications are gained. Every class and student is a learning experience and the best teachers continually try to develop themselves and improve their teaching and learning experiences. With that in mind we designed the Teacher’s Guide for Less is More Series with an emphasis on teacher reflection. We want the Teacher’s Guide to be just that, a guide to your teaching, methodology and practice. Instead of being a collection of wordy instructions on a page the Teacher’s Guide offers suggestions for how pages are taught, but encourages the teacher to explore their practice and reflect on their teaching. Space is provided in the book for note taking and lesson planning, for reflecting on class experience and content. The Teacher’s Guide also provides variations on each page for teachers to achieve differentiation in their classes if needed. We hope that the journey of learning is not restricted to just the students and that with Less is More Series teachers feel like a valuable part of the experience.

Less is More

The Less is More series was the first step for Press Glocal into producing an English language learning series. With Less is More we wanted the series to encompass all of the concepts that were behind the origins of Press Glocal. The Less is More series is a book which is based on glocalized learning. It embodies the combined experiences of the authors, who have lived and taught English in Turkey for many years, and the knowledge of Turkish culture and language learning. It is designed to give students, primarily Turkish students, experience of learning a language with things that they can relate to.

Levels Available: A1, A2, B1, B2
